Northwest Arkansas providers launch community‑focused Maternal Life360 program

In Northwest Arkansas, maternal‑health professionals are emphasizing community as a lifeline for new mothers, especially as 51 of the state’s 71 counties lack labor and delivery services. Laura Harris, a licensed counselor who runs Harris Counseling and Consulting in Bentonville, notes that many mothers ask, “Is this normal? Is this typical?” when navigating the challenges of early parenthood.

Local voices stress the need for connection

Harris, a mother of three, says community conversation helps mothers feel less isolated. “Expectations are high – we feel we must be everything for our kids,” she explained. She recalled how past generations relied on extended family and neighbors to care for children, a support network that has faded in recent decades.

UAMS data shows that a majority of Arkansas counties lack nearby labor‑and‑delivery hospitals, forcing rural families to travel 30 to 45 minutes for birth services. Loni Harris, a pelvic‑floor therapist from a small town in Northwest Arkansas, described the strain of long travel distances for expectant mothers.

Post‑partum depression remains a national concern

The National Institute of Health reports that postpartum depression affects roughly 10‑20 % of new mothers worldwide. Harris says the condition underscores how demanding parenting has become, with higher expectations, reduced education, and fewer support resources.

Occupational therapist‑turned‑mother Drew Merchen shared her own struggle with a difficult postpartum period, which inspired her to specialize in infant feeding and sleep. “When a baby fusses at 2 a.m., there’s a reason,” she said, urging parents to seek evidence‑based help.

Maternal Life360 program offers home‑visitor support

Mercy Hospital in Rogers recently launched Arkansas’s first Maternal Life360 program, funded in part by Medicaid dollars. The initiative matches qualifying mothers with high‑risk pregnancies to a home visitor who assists throughout pregnancy and after birth. Elizabeth Pitman, Director of Medical Services for the Arkansas Department of Human Services, explained that home visitors help mothers navigate medical appointments, secure food, housing, and childcare, and address conditions such as hypertension or diabetes that qualify families for the program.

The program, already operating in central Arkansas hospitals, aims to extend its reach to the many rural counties that lack immediate obstetric care, offering a vital safety net for families who might otherwise feel abandoned.

Building a stronger community for mothers

Providers and mothers alike agree that fostering a supportive network can mitigate the isolation many new parents experience during maternity leave. By connecting families to resources, home‑visitors, and each other, the Maternal Life360 program seeks to restore the communal bonds that once helped raise children across generations.
