Danbury leaders decry ICE sweeps as overreach, call for immigration reform

Danbury, Conn. – On Monday, city officials and state leaders walked through Danbury’s downtown to meet residents shaken by a recent wave of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests. More than 70 local residents were taken into custody between Monday and Thursday, a number officials say reflects a broader surge in immigration enforcement across southern Connecticut.

Local impact and community concerns

Mayor Roberto Alves joined U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal at City Hall to listen to business owners and families who say the raids have created fear and anxiety. Several shop owners reported employees staying home out of concern for their safety, while parents voiced worries about bringing children to school amid the heightened presence of federal agents.

Political response

Sen. Blumenthal criticized the Trump administration’s approach, noting that the promised focus on “the worst of the worst” – individuals with serious criminal records – does not match the reality on the ground. “Only a handful of those detained have any criminal history,” he said, urging Congress and the administration to recalibrate enforcement priorities.

White House Border Czar Tom Homan defended the operation on CNN, stating that ICE agents are carrying out their congressionally authorized duties by targeting illegal immigrants with final removal orders and those who overstay visas. He added that ICE has no intention of terrorizing children, calling such claims a political tactic meant to inflame public sentiment.

Federal stance

The Department of Homeland Security declined to comment on specific operational details, citing officer safety, but reaffirmed its commitment to enforce immigration laws nationwide, including in Connecticut.

Looking ahead

Both local and state leaders anticipate that the upcoming midterm elections in November could shape future immigration policy. Community activists continue to organize protests and provide information on detainees’ rights, urging residents to stay informed and engaged.
