Uniontown Wrestler Chris Pierce Heads to Jordan for Veteran World Championships

Uniontown, Pa. – Chris Pierce, a Laurel Highlands graduate and longtime fixture at Pierce Performance Training in the Uniontown Mall, is preparing for his fifth appearance at the Veteran World Championships. The 48‑year‑old will travel to Amman, Jordan, Oct. 6‑11 to compete in both freestyle and Greco‑Roman wrestling.

Local Roots, Global Competition

Pierce’s wrestling career has taken him around the globe, but his ties to Uniontown remain strong. He recently captured gold in the World Wrestling Festival in Warsaw, Poland, defeating host‑nation competitor Swalomir Zieba in the 130‑kilogram (286‑pound) final of Division C (ages 46‑50). “It’s a big thrill to go to all these different places because of wrestling,” Pierce said, “but I am going with the sole focus of earning the gold in freestyle and Greco‑Roman.”

Age Is Just a Number

At an age when many athletes consider retirement, Pierce refuses to let age define his limits. He acknowledges the skepticism he hears in his gym, saying, “I hear constantly that I’m too old, but we are not allowed to say those words in the gym.” His philosophy is simple: lead by example. “I kind of make it a point to be that coach who will also do the training,” he explained. “It pays dividends, and my clients can’t argue with what I am having them do if I am right with them.”

Overcoming Setbacks

Pierce’s journey has not been without hardship. Several years ago he suffered a stroke and tore every ligament in his knee, forcing a year‑long hiatus from competition. “The stroke was a blessing in disguise,” he reflected. “I had to change my training and diet to make sure I didn’t have a recurrence. That not only made me a better athlete but a better trainer.” Today, he remains injury‑free and uses his personal challenges as motivation for his clients, encouraging them to stay active rather than succumb to an early grave.

Community Impact

Beyond the mat, Pierce runs Pierce Performance Training, where he works with clients of all ages. He stresses the importance of staying active, especially as people reach milestones that often trigger inactivity. “When people get to a certain point in life where they become inactive, let their health go, and that tends to lead to an early grave,” he warned. His message resonates with Uniontown residents seeking healthier lifestyles.

Looking Ahead

As the Jordan trip approaches, Pierce remains focused on his goal of adding another world title to his résumé. “I still love getting on the mat and battling,” he said. “I still have goals I would like to fulfill, and I don’t want to use age as an excuse to stop.” The Uniontown community will be cheering him on as he represents the region on the international stage.
