GameStop projects lower Q2 sales as stores close and France unit is sold

GameStop Corp. announced on Monday that it expects second‑quarter net sales to decline sharply as it moves to close a number of retail locations and finalize the sale of its France business. The videogame retailer projects quarterly net sales in the range of $780 million to $800 million, down from $972.2 million reported a year earlier.

Financial outlook and cash position

The company also said it expects cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities to sit between $5.05 billion and $5.07 billion at the end of the quarter, a notable drop from $8.69 billion at the close of the prior year’s second quarter. GameStop’s shares slipped roughly 2 % in pre‑market trading following the release.

Profit expectations

Net income for the quarter is projected to be between $290 million and $310 million, compared with $168.6 million a year ago. The higher profit estimate reflects about $238 million in net gains tied to GameStop’s eBay derivative asset and equity investment, partially offset by an estimated $75 million loss on digital assets and related receivables.

Strategic moves: eBay stake and France exit

GameStop continues to hold a near‑10 % stake in eBay, a position it built even after a takeover bid was rejected in May. Bloomberg News reported earlier this month that the company could abandon the bid and instead pursue a partnership or joint venture with the online auction platform.

Separately, GameStop is winding down its operations in France, selling the subsidiary as part of a broader effort to streamline the business and focus on higher‑margin segments such as trading cards and collectibles. The exit aligns with the retailer’s shift away from traditional hardware sales toward more profitable product lines.

Looking ahead

GameStop is scheduled to release its full second‑quarter results on September 8. Investors will be watching how the company balances store closures, international divestitures, and its ongoing relationship with eBay while attempting to stabilize cash flow and improve profitability.

Analysts have expressed skepticism about the feasibility of a full acquisition of eBay, questioning how GameStop would finance such a deal and noting limited strategic overlap between the two firms. Nonetheless, the retailer’s focus on cash‑rich assets and a narrower product mix may help it navigate the challenging retail environment.
