Coping with Trauma: Guidance for Witnesses of Violent Events

In Fairfax County, Virginia, a tragic incident unfolded on Interstate 495 when a man stabbed four individuals, resulting in the deaths of a woman and a dog. The chaos began after a road rage incident, leading to a confrontation with a Virginia State Police trooper who shot the suspect in self-defense.

Such traumatic events can have profound impacts on witnesses. A study from June 2025 revealed that 64% of adults in the United States have been exposed to in-person violence, with Black and Hispanic adults facing higher risks. Additionally, 70% of American adults have experienced a traumatic event at least once in their lives.

Processing Trauma

Experts emphasize the importance of addressing trauma immediately. Philadelphia-based trauma therapist Shari Botwin recommends speaking and writing about the experience as soon as possible. Sharing the story with trusted individuals can help process the event and prevent long-term psychological issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Botwin advises describing the sensory details of the event and journaling daily for at least 15 minutes. This practice can help ward off severe consequences of trauma.

Support and Recovery

For those without access to professional therapy, support from family and friends is crucial. Basic self-care, including nutritious meals, sufficient sleep, exercise, and social connections, can aid recovery. Clinical psychologist Ricky Greenwald highlights the effectiveness of therapies like EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) in addressing traumatic memories.

Despite the challenges, each person’s journey toward healing is unique. Botwin stresses that while trauma cannot be cured, it can be managed by facing it, avoiding harmful coping strategies, and practicing self-compassion.

The witness of the Fairfax County incident shared her struggles with loneliness in recovery, emphasizing the need for societal acceptance of mental health challenges. Her experience serves as a reminder of the importance of community support in overcoming trauma.
