Arkansas National Guard soldiers return to Fort Smith after D.C. safety mission

FORT SMITH, Ark. — On Thursday, seventy‑eight soldiers from the Arkansas Army National Guard arrived back at Ebbing Air National Guard Base after a week‑long deployment to Washington, D.C. The troops took part in the “D.C. Safe and Beautiful” mission, a joint effort with the District of Columbia’s Metropolitan Police Department aimed at bolstering public safety and community resilience in the capital.

Mission details and local impact

While in D.C., members of the 142nd Field Artillery Brigade performed safety patrols throughout high‑traffic areas, offering a visible security presence that helped deter potential threats. In addition to routine patrols, the soldiers were on standby to respond to emergencies, providing trauma care and first‑aid treatment to civilians during critical incidents. Military leaders highlighted the importance of the soldiers’ medical training, noting that rapid, on‑scene care can save lives when seconds matter.

Community pride and support

Families and community members gathered at the base to welcome the returning service members. “We are proud of our Guard and grateful for the professionalism they displayed,” said Colonel James Whitaker, commander of the 142nd Brigade. “Their work in the nation’s capital reflects the same dedication they bring to protecting Arkansas every day.” Local officials, including Fort Smith Mayor Frank White, praised the Guard’s contribution, emphasizing how the mission reinforces the partnership between state and federal agencies in safeguarding American citizens.

Why the mission matters

The “Safe and Beautiful” initiative aligns with broader national‑security goals that prioritize visible, community‑focused policing and rapid medical response. By deploying National Guard units to assist civilian law‑enforcement agencies, the Department of Defense demonstrates a commitment to supporting domestic safety without compromising the Guard’s primary mission of defending the state and nation.

Looking ahead

After a brief debriefing at the base, the soldiers will resume their regular training schedules and prepare for upcoming state‑level emergencies, including disaster response and support for local law‑enforcement operations. The Arkansas National Guard continues to be a vital resource for both state and federal missions, embodying the values of service, sacrifice, and community protection.
