Dan + Shay Reveal Near Breakup Over Communication Issues at Career Peak

Country music fans across the nation learned that the Grammy‑winning duo Dan + Shay almost called it quits at the height of their success. In a candid interview on the “Artist Friendly” podcast, members Dan Smyers (39) and Shay Mooney (34) described how differing work styles and poor communication threatened to end the partnership.

Unhealthy dynamics surfaced during a high‑point

Mooney said the duo hit a rough patch after their breakout hits, noting, “there was unhealthy dynamics between both of us because we process things a lot differently.” The tension reached a critical point in 2021, when the pair faced a choice: celebrate their achievements or confront the underlying issues.

“We had that moment in 2021, and it was kind of like, all right, do we ride off into the sunset and celebrate our accomplishments or do we have some really hard conversations and fix this?” Mooney recalled.

A pivotal meeting at Smyers’ home

After securing an opening slot on Kenny Chesney’s tour, the duo was excited but uncertain whether they could perform together given the strained relationship. Smyers explained that they decided to meet at his house for an honest discussion, describing the night as “the most pivotal, critical moment in our entire career.” Both stayed up into the early morning, hashing out grievances.

Mooney later reflected that he sensed Smyers wasn’t enjoying the shows, noting that Smyers is “particular about those details that people don’t see” and can become upset when technical issues arise, such as a malfunctioning video wall. Mooney admitted he initially struggled to understand these sensitivities.

Finding common ground

Through the conversation, the pair recognized the need to meet each other halfway. “When we finally were like, ‘Hey, you’re not good at enjoying these things sometimes. I enjoy everything even when it’s bad,'” Mooney said. “If we can meet somewhere in the middle, we can make this beautiful thing.” The duo ultimately chose to stay together, each apologizing for their role in the breakdown.

They also instituted a new rule: they will now tell each other when something is bothering them instead of letting frustrations build up and explode. This proactive communication strategy has helped them maintain a healthier partnership while continuing to tour and record.

Career highlights

Dan + Shay entered the country scene in 2013 with the debut single “19 You + Me,” followed by their first album “Where It All Began” in 2014. Their 2018 hit “Tequila” earned them a Grammy in 2019, and they secured consecutive wins in 2020 and 2021 for “Speechless” and “10,000 Hours.” The duo’s resilience amid personal challenges underscores the importance of honest dialogue in both family and professional settings.

Fans can look forward to upcoming tour dates and new music, confident that the partnership behind the songs remains strong.
