Dallas Cowboys add former Steelers first‑round pick offensive tackle Broderick Jones

The Dallas Cowboys announced a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers that will bring offensive tackle Broderick Jones to Texas. The agreement, reported by ESPN and pending a physical, sends Jones and a 2027 fourth‑round draft pick to Dallas. In return, the Steelers will receive the Cowboys’ third‑ and sixth‑round picks in the 2027 draft.

Jones’ background and recent role

Broderick Jones was the Steelers’ first‑round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. Over three seasons he started 38 games, playing both left and right tackle positions. Despite his experience, Jones spent the most recent preseason on the Steelers’ reserve roster, giving Dallas an opportunity to add depth to its offensive line.

How the trade fits Dallas’ offensive line plans

The Cowboys entered the 2026 season looking to solidify the right side of their line. Last year, veteran Terence Steele anchored the right tackle spot, while first‑round pick Tyler Guyton showed promise at left tackle during preseason workouts. Adding Jones gives Dallas a proven starter who can compete for the right tackle job, potentially allowing the team to start four first‑round picks—center Cooper Beebe, left tackle Guyton, and the two new first‑round selections the Cowboys expect to add in the upcoming draft.

What Pittsburgh gains

In exchange, the Steelers receive two mid‑round selections in 2027, giving them additional flexibility as they continue to build a young offensive line. Pittsburgh drafted Max Iheanachor at No. 21 overall in April to play right tackle, and he will now compete with veteran Dylan Cook for that spot. First‑round pick Troy Fautanu, who has been developing at left tackle, remains on the roster.

Coaching connections

Former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, now leading the Steelers, is familiar with Dallas’ preference for a deep, versatile offensive line. His knowledge of both organizations may help smooth the transition for Jones as he joins a unit that values strong protection for quarterback Dak Prescott.

Looking ahead

Dallas will evaluate Jones during his physical and preseason practices. If he earns the starting right tackle role, the Cowboys could field a line anchored by multiple recent first‑round picks—a testament to the franchise’s commitment to building a dominant offensive front. The trade also underscores the fluid nature of NFL roster management, where teams continually adjust personnel to stay competitive.

Fan reaction

Local fans have expressed optimism on social media, noting that Jones brings both experience and youth to a line that has struggled with injuries in recent seasons. The trade aligns with the Cowboys’ broader strategy of reinforcing key positions through the draft and strategic acquisitions.
