NHTSA recalls six Britax car seat models over handle safety defect

Parents across the country have been warned that six popular Britax car seat models may pose a safety risk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a recall affecting over 114,600 seats because a screw in the handle can work loose, allowing the handle to partially detach. If the handle fails, an infant or young child could tumble out of the seat during a crash or even while the vehicle is stopped.

Models included in the recall

The recall covers the following Britax models:

  • B‑Safe Gen 2
  • B‑Safe Gen 2 Flexfit
  • B‑Safe Gen 2 Flexfit Plus
  • B‑Safe 35
  • B‑Safe Ultra
  • Endeavours

Production dates vary, with some units dating back to 2020. Families can verify whether their seat is affected by visiting the NHTSA’s recall lookup tool and entering the model and production date.

What parents should do now

Britax is still working on a permanent remedy. The agency expects owner letters to be mailed by October 19 to anyone who registered their seat. In the meantime, the safest course of action is to stop using the car seat entirely. If the seat must remain in the vehicle for a short period, parents should avoid handling it by the defective handle.

Families can also call Britax’s customer‑service line at (888) 427‑4829 for more information and to arrange a replacement or repair once the solution is finalized.

Additional safety tips for car seats

While waiting for the recall resolution, parents can reinforce overall child‑travel safety by following these best practices:

  • Register every car seat purchase with the manufacturer to receive direct recall notices.
  • Avoid buying used or hand‑me‑down car seats; their history may be unknown and safety standards may have changed.
  • Check weight and height limits regularly and move to the next size up when a child outgrows a seat.
  • Ensure the seat is installed correctly. Many local police or fire departments offer free installation checks; look for community safety events in your area.
  • Consult the American Academy of Pediatrics for guidance on the safest placement in the vehicle and age‑appropriate seat types.

Staying vigilant about recalls and proper installation helps protect the most vulnerable passengers on the road—our children.
