Washoe County Opens Resource Center for Wildfire‑Affected Residents

In response to the devastation caused by recent wildfires across northern Nevada, Washoe County officials have opened a dedicated Community Resource Center to provide a one‑stop location for residents seeking help. The center is housed in the North Valley Community Center at 8085 Silver Lake Road in Reno, offering a convenient, central venue for those affected.

What services are available?

County staff will be on hand to answer questions and connect families with a range of resources. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will assist veterans and their families, while county inspectors and permitting officials can help navigate rebuilding permits and code requirements. Insurance specialists are scheduled to offer guidance on filing claims, and the Washoe County School District will provide information on school enrollment, transportation and support services for children displaced by the fires.

Hours of operation

The Resource Center will operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, August 28, through Monday, August 31. After that, the center will shift to evening hours, opening from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 1, through Friday, September 4, to accommodate residents who work during the day.

Why the center matters

County leaders describe the effort as a “tabling event” designed to create a welcoming environment where wildfire‑affected families can find reliable information and connect with the assistance they need. By consolidating multiple agencies under one roof, the county hopes to reduce the confusion and travel time that many residents have faced while trying to rebuild their lives.

“Our goal is to make sure every neighbor who has been impacted by the fires knows exactly where to turn for help,” said a Washoe County spokesperson. “We understand the challenges families are confronting, and we want to provide a steady, compassionate point of contact.”

Community response

Local volunteers have already begun staffing the tables, offering a friendly face and a listening ear. Residents are encouraged to bring any documentation related to insurance claims, property damage, or school enrollment to expedite assistance. The county also plans to distribute printed guides that outline steps for rebuilding, accessing financial aid, and obtaining mental‑health support.

As the recovery effort continues, Washoe County officials will monitor the center’s usage and adjust staffing or hours as needed. The county urges anyone affected by the wildfires to visit the Resource Center or call the Washoe 311 hotline for additional information.
