Oklahoma Highway Patrol to Provide Update on Fatal I-40 Wrong-Way Crash

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) is expected to provide new information regarding a devastating wrong-way crash that resulted in the deaths of four young individuals on Interstate 40 in Canadian County. The incident occurred early Friday morning when a driver, allegedly under the influence, drove east in the westbound lanes near Czech Hall Road, colliding head-on with another vehicle.

Community Impact and Response

The crash claimed the lives of Kiercey Hickson, Quincy Jones, Haleigh Salazar, and Brad Palmer, all aged between 18 and 20. The tragedy has deeply affected the local community, particularly El Reno Public Schools, where two of the victims had recently graduated. School leaders expressed their sorrow, noting the bright futures that were tragically cut short. “They had their full life ahead of them,” one school leader remarked, emphasizing the profound loss felt by the community.

In response to the tragedy, the victims’ families have established GoFundMe pages to assist with funeral expenses, highlighting the community’s support and solidarity during this difficult time.

Legal Proceedings

The 27-year-old driver accused of causing the crash was initially hospitalized in critical condition but has since been booked into the Canadian County Jail. He faces several charges, including second-degree murder and driving under the influence. Investigators reported finding empty alcohol bottles in the suspect’s vehicle, further supporting the DUI charge. As formal charges have not yet been filed, the suspect’s name has not been released.

The OHP has scheduled a news briefing to share further details about the incident, which has sparked discussions about road safety and the dangers of impaired driving.
