Labor Day weekend sees spike in ER visits, says Baptist Health doctor

West Palm Beach – The extended Labor Day weekend is traditionally a time for family gatherings, barbecues and road trips, but it also brings a noticeable rise in emergency room visits, according to Dr. Kyle Gerakopoulos, an emergency physician with Baptist Health. Speaking to WPBF, Dr. Gerakopoulos outlined the factors that contribute to the uptick and offered practical advice for residents who want to stay healthy over the holiday.

Why the weekend sees more ER traffic

“When people have three days off, they tend to travel farther, cook outdoors and engage in activities that they might not do during a regular workweek,” Dr. Gerakopoulos said. “That increased movement, combined with higher alcohol consumption and the temptation to overindulge at barbecues, creates more opportunities for accidents, injuries and acute illnesses.”

The doctor noted that common reasons for the surge include:

  • Motor‑vehicle collisions, especially on highways leading to popular beach destinations.
  • Burns and cuts from grilling, fireworks and outdoor cooking.
  • Dehydration and heat‑related issues, even in late summer weather.
  • Alcohol‑related injuries, ranging from falls to more serious trauma.

Tips for families to stay safe

Dr. Gerakopoulos urged families to take a few simple precautions:

  • Plan travel routes ahead of time and avoid driving while fatigued or under the influence.
  • Practice grill safety by keeping a fire extinguisher nearby, using proper tools, and never leaving open flames unattended.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, especially if spending time outdoors in the sun.
  • Limit alcohol intake and designate a sober driver for any group that plans to drink.
  • Know the signs of heat‑related illness such as dizziness, nausea, and rapid heartbeat, and seek care promptly if they appear.

He also reminded readers that Baptist Health’s emergency departments remain open 24/7 throughout the holiday, and that patients should not hesitate to seek care for serious symptoms, even if they think the issue might be minor.

Community impact and hospital preparedness

Local hospitals anticipate the seasonal surge and adjust staffing levels accordingly. “We increase our emergency staff, ensure that all critical supplies are stocked, and coordinate with EMS partners to handle higher call volumes,” Dr. Gerakopoulos explained. “Our goal is to provide timely, high‑quality care for everyone who walks through our doors, especially during busy holiday periods.”

He concluded with a reminder that prevention is the best medicine. “A little planning and common sense can go a long way toward keeping families safe and healthy over the Labor Day weekend,” he said.
