California allocates $124 million for new truck‑only lanes on I‑5 in Shasta County

Shasta County will soon see major upgrades to Interstate 5 after the California Transportation Commission voted earlier this month to earmark $124 million for the Fix 5 Cascade Gateway Project. The effort, co‑sponsored by the Shasta Regional Transportation Agency (SRTA) and overseen by Caltrans District 2, will create 14 miles of part‑time truck‑only lanes and a suite of auxiliary improvements.

Project details and timeline

The construction corridor runs from the Bechelli Lane/Churn Creek overcrossing north to the Mountain Gate overcrossing, just beyond the City of Shasta Lake. A contract bid process is set to begin this fall, with groundbreaking expected in the spring of 2027 and completion targeted for 2029.

Safety and freight efficiency focus

SRTA Executive Director Sean Tiedgen called the plan a “unique approach” to regional freight‑safety challenges. By dedicating lanes to trucks during peak hours, the project aims to reduce collision risk for both commercial and passenger vehicles, a goal echoed by Caltrans District 2 Director Dave Moore.

Additional roadway enhancements

Beyond the truck lanes, the initiative includes four new auxiliary lanes—two northbound and two southbound—between State Route 44 and State Route 299, as well as between State Route 273 and Oasis Road. A third lane will be added between Hilltop Drive and State Route 273 in both directions. Seven bridges will receive upgrades, including increased vertical clearance for trucks at two locations, improved emergency‑lane management for fire evacuations, and the installation of a zero‑emission truck‑charging station.

Context for Shasta’s economy

Trucking, especially lumber transport, is a cornerstone of Shasta County’s economy. State‑collected labor data show the industry’s importance to local jobs and tax revenue. While California has seen a steady decline in crashes involving large trucks over the past four years, the state recorded 295 fatalities in 2025 and 69 so far in 2026, underscoring the need for continued safety measures.

Broader state investment

The $124 million allocation follows a recent wave of California infrastructure spending, including a $325 million commitment to a tunnel on U.S. Route 101 to mitigate landslide risks and other highway improvements in the North Bay.

Residents can expect reduced congestion for passenger vehicles, enhanced safety for freight operators, and a boost to the region’s economic vitality as the project moves forward.
