Residents Return Home After Chemical Tank Crisis in Garden Grove

Residents of Garden Grove, California, can finally return home after evacuation orders were lifted following a hazardous materials incident at GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems. The incident involved a damaged chemical tank containing highly flammable methyl methacrylate (MMA), which posed a risk of explosion.

Community Impact

Approximately 50,000 people were evacuated from the Orange County city when the tank overheated and became compromised. Over the Memorial Day weekend, a crack in the tank relieved pressure, preventing a catastrophic explosion. By Tuesday, about 16,000 residents were still under evacuation orders, but these were lifted after the tank’s temperature stabilized.

Authorities, including the Orange County Fire Authority, worked tirelessly to manage the situation. Crews sprayed water on the tank, and a sprinkler system was used to cool it down. The tank’s temperature was brought down to 92 degrees from a high of 100 degrees, allowing residents to return safely.

Health and Safety Measures

Despite assurances from health officials that no hazardous levels of contamination were detected, air quality, sewer systems, and storm drains will be monitored for several months. Exposure to MMA can cause respiratory and neurological issues, as well as skin, eye, and throat irritation.

Garden Grove Mayor Stephanie Klopfenstein has expressed intentions to hold GKN accountable for the incident. The company has apologized for the disruption and emphasized their commitment to community safety.

Investigation and Response

The crisis began when vapor was detected releasing from a storage tank at the facility, which manufactures engine structures for aircraft. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency, allowing crews to shift from defensive to high-risk offensive operations to prevent an explosion.

Orange County Fire Authority Chief TJ McGovern indicated that a cooling system failure likely caused the tank to overheat. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the malfunction.
