Arizona Wildcats aim to improve defense as Danny Gonzales outlines camp plans

Arizona’s football program entered its 2026 training camp with a clear defensive mission. Defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales, speaking on the second‑to‑last day of camp, reminded players that finishing 19th in total defense last season was merely “okay” and that the team aspires to be among the nation’s elite.

Last season’s statistical success

In 2025 the Wildcats posted one of the best defensive numbers in school history, ranking second in the Big 12 and allowing just 308.5 yards per game. The unit was seventh nationally in pass defense and second in forced turnovers, achievements earned with a roster that still had seven future NFL prospects, including five defensive backs.

Front‑line depth and pass rush

Gonzales highlighted the depth he sees on the defensive line, noting that nine to eleven linemen can compete at a Big 12 level. “If we can keep those guys fresh, our pass rush should be pretty good,” he said, adding that a four‑man rush could make the Wildcats dangerous against opposing quarterbacks.

Transfer edge rusher Cooper Blomstrom, who recorded 7.5 sacks last season at the FCS level, will move to linebacker to test his skills against FBS offensive lines. Gonzales praised both Blomstrom and fellow transfer Everett Roussaw Jr. for their tape, saying they give the defense new disguises and flexibility in the 20‑personnel package.

Secondary rebuild

The secondary is undergoing a major overhaul. Gonzales believes the unit can now cover man‑to‑man better than last year. Starting cornerbacks appear to be Jay’Vion Cole and Dwight Bootle II, with Malcolm Hartzog anchoring the nickel slot. Safeties Gavin Hunter and Quinn Olson are expected to start, while Oregon transfer Daylen Austin remains limited and may not see the field early.

Hartzog, a Nebraska transfer standing 5‑foot‑8 and 187 pounds, impressed Gonzales as one of the best man‑to‑man cover players he has seen. Olson, a walk‑on from Sioux City, Iowa, brings a unique perspective from his former role as a high‑school quarterback, which he says helps him anticipate offensive schemes.

Run defense improvements

Run defense was a weakness in the first half of 2025, but Gonzales feels the unit is “further along” this year. He singled out Australian defensive tackle Zac Siulepa, a 6‑foot‑6, 368‑pound interior force, as a major advantage in short‑yardage situations.

Coaches and players on the future

Gonzales stressed that the defensive staff will continue rotating players to keep them fresh and to test different looks. He also noted that the team’s depth will allow the Wildcats to adapt to various offensive attacks throughout the season.

As the Wildcats prepare for the upcoming season, the emphasis on aggressive front‑seven play, improved man coverage, and a stronger run game reflects Gonzales’s belief that the defense can move beyond “okay” and become a true contender in the Big 12.
