How to Use Credit Card Points and Miles for Free Flights and Hotels

Travel rewards can feel overwhelming for anyone just starting out, but the basics are simple. Credit cards from major issuers such as Chase, American Express, Citi and Capital One let you earn points or miles that can be turned into free airline tickets or hotel stays.

What Are Points and Miles?

Points and miles are reward currencies offered by credit cards and travel brands. Though they have different names, they work the same way: you accumulate them through spending and then redeem them for award tickets or award nights. Taxes and fees still apply, but the bulk of the cost is covered by your rewards.

How to Earn Them

The fastest way to build a balance is to claim a welcome bonus. Most cards require you to spend a set amount within a few months to unlock a large lump‑sum of points or miles. After that, you keep earning on everyday purchases, with each card offering a different earning rate. Some airline‑ or hotel‑branded cards let you earn directly with that brand, supplementing the points you get from your primary credit‑card.

Shopping portals and issuer offers can add extra points. For example, American Express Membership Rewards or Bilt Points can be earned through partners like Rakuten, and many issuers run targeted offers (e.g., Amex Offers, Chase Offers) that give bonus points for purchases at select merchants.

Transferring to Travel Partners

If your points come from a flexible‑earning card, you’ll usually transfer them to a travel partner. Each issuer has its own list of airline and hotel partners. For instance, a Citi ThankYou Rewards card can transfer to any of Citi’s 21 partners, such as American Airlines AAdvantage. Transfers are one‑way, so it’s best to wait until you have a specific flight or hotel in mind.

Co‑branded airline or hotel cards often skip the transfer step; you can book directly using the miles or points earned with that brand.

Finding the Best Redemptions

Searching for award flights or hotel stays can be complex, but tools and apps exist to simplify the process. If you prefer simplicity over maximum value, you can always book through the issuer’s travel portal, though the redemption rate may be lower than a direct transfer.

Valuations show that transferable points typically yield 1.6–2.2 cents per point, while most airline points fall in the 1.1–1.6 cent range. Hotel points often value under 1 cent, though programs like World of Hyatt can be higher.

Why It Matters

Using points and miles can turn a costly business‑class flight or a multi‑night luxury hotel stay into a near‑free experience. Even economy travel can be dramatically cheaper, sometimes costing only a few dollars in taxes and fees.

With a solid stash of points or miles, you can enjoy travel that might otherwise be out of reach, all while keeping cash for other family priorities.
