NFL Season Returns: Drivers and Homeowners Urged to Review Insurance Policies

The NFL and college football seasons are about to begin, bringing tailgate parties, stadium trips, and home‑watch gatherings across the country. While fans celebrate, the surge of drivers leaving venues creates one of the riskiest windows on the road.

Post‑Game Traffic Spike Increases Accident Risk

Janet Ruiz, director of Strategic Communication for the Insurance Information Institute, warns that the two‑hour period after the final whistle sees a convergence of traffic congestion, distracted driving, and heightened emotions. With stadiums holding between 61,500 and 82,500 spectators, the sheer volume of motorists raises the likelihood of collisions.

Impaired Driving Remains a Major Threat

Many fans consume alcohol at games, bars, and watch parties. Michael Barrett, co‑principal of Barrett Insurance Agency, urges fans to skip drinking or assign a designated driver. A DUI can increase auto‑insurance premiums by roughly 90% for three to five years, according to The Zebra’s 2026 State of Insurance data.

Insurance analyst Beth Swanson adds that elevated rates can persist for years and may make future coverage harder to obtain, especially for high‑risk drivers who must turn to pricier nonstandard carriers.

Stadium Parking Lots Pose Additional Hazards

Even sober drivers can be affected by accidents in crowded parking areas. Common claims include backing‑up collisions, hit‑and‑runs, door damage, and theft. Vandalism and stray footballs can also cause property damage, leaving owners responsible for repairs if the other driver is uninsured.

Swanson notes that minimum liability coverage only protects others, not the policyholder’s own vehicle. Comprehensive and collision coverage are recommended to safeguard against these risks.

Protect Your Home When Hosting Game‑Day Gatherings

Hosts should also review homeowners policies. Social‑host liability coverage, typically included in standard homeowners policies, can protect the host if an intoxicated guest causes injury or property damage after leaving the event. This coverage does not extend to knowingly providing alcohol to minors.

Ruiz suggests evaluating liability limits and considering a personal umbrella policy for added protection when exposure is high.

Practical Safety Tips for Fans

  • Plan a sober ride home or designate a driver before the game.
  • Check that your auto policy includes comprehensive and collision coverage.
  • Lock doors, remove valuables, and ensure mirrors and backup cameras work.
  • Consider a dash‑cam to document any incidents.
  • If traveling out‑of‑state, verify your policy’s coverage limits and any mileage or geographic restrictions on rental vehicles.

By taking these precautions and confirming adequate insurance, fans can enjoy the excitement of football without jeopardizing their financial security.
