Paramount eyes sequel to 2003 rom‑com “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” with Kate Hudson producing

Paramount Pictures announced that a sequel to the 2003 romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is moving forward. The studio confirmed that Kate Hudson, who played magazine columnist Andie Anderson in the original, will serve as a producer on the new film. Hudson will partner with veteran producer Stacey Sher, whose credits include Pulp Fiction, Erin Brockovich and Django Unchained.

According to sources close to the project, Paramount is still in the early development stage. The studio is actively seeking a screenwriter, but no additional cast members or directors have been attached at this point. Variety was the first outlet to report the development, and the information has been corroborated by multiple industry insiders.

Potential return of original leads

The sequel’s casting remains uncertain. It is not yet known whether Hudson’s former co‑star Matthew McConaughey, who portrayed advertising executive Benjamin Barry, will reprise his role. Both actors have hinted at openness to returning, but have emphasized that a compelling script would be the deciding factor.

In a 2024 appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, Hudson said studios are always looking at the possibility of a follow‑up, adding, “All that matters would be the script and if Matthew and I were into the script. I think we’re both totally open, it has just never happened.” McConaughey recently described the original film as his favorite rom‑com, calling it “the gift that keeps on giving” on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Box‑office legacy and recent nostalgia wave

The original film earned nearly $180 million worldwide and remains a cultural touchstone, especially for its iconic yellow silk Carolina Herrera gown worn by Hudson. Its enduring popularity aligns with a broader industry trend of reviving early‑2000s franchises. This year, Paramount’s sister studio Warner Bros. Discovery has seen strong returns from sequels such as The Devil Wears Prada 2, the new Scary Movie (over $231 million worldwide), and Toy Story 5 (more than $1.128 billion).

Paramount’s effort to develop the sequel coincides with the company’s ongoing merger of its film and television operations with Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent of CNN, HBO and other media assets. Industry analysts suggest the consolidation could streamline content creation and provide more resources for franchise development.

What’s next?

Fans can expect further updates as Paramount narrows down a writer and potentially locks in additional talent. The project’s progress will likely be tracked alongside other nostalgic revivals, offering a glimpse into how studios are leveraging beloved properties to attract both original audiences and a new generation of viewers.
