As summer unfolds and more families head to Beaver Lake in Rogers, Arkansas, local firefighters are emphasizing the importance of safety precautions for boaters. This reminder follows a recent boat fire during the Memorial Day weekend that required a multi-agency response.
Increased Boating Activity Expected
With the Fourth of July approaching, boating activity on Beaver Lake is anticipated to rise significantly. Mason Drumm, a firefighter at Beaver Lake, noted, “There will be more boating activity as Fourth of July comes in and it’s 250th, so we will be getting a lot more calls.”
The recent boat fire, which saw about 80 percent of the vessel burned, was first reported to the Highway 94 Volunteer Fire Department. Chief Eric Smith explained, “We got on scene and discovered there was a boat on fire. About 80 percent was burnt away and it was still actively burning.” Fortunately, all individuals on board had evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported.
Safety Tips for Boaters
Firefighters are advising boaters to ensure their vessels are in good working condition and equipped with necessary safety gear. Mason Drumm highlighted the importance of hydration, stating, “Make sure you’re hydrating yourself on the lake. Just because you’re in the water doesn’t mean you don’t have to drink water.”
Additionally, officials recommend checking for life jackets, a horn, and a fire extinguisher before setting out. These precautions can be crucial in preventing or managing emergencies on the water.
Arkansas Game and Fish is currently investigating the cause of the boat fire, and local authorities continue to stress the importance of preparation as a means to ensure a safe and enjoyable boating season.
