The Martin County Sheriff’s Office has identified Walter Turner Jr., a 43-year-old from West Palm Beach, as the suspect in a fatal wrong-way crash that occurred on U.S. Route 1. The crash, which took place on Sunday, May 24, resulted in Turner’s death and injuries to four others.
Incident Details
According to officials, Turner, who had a criminal history including drug and battery charges, was driving a 2022 Ford Escape SUV at high speed in the wrong direction for 16 miles. The pursuit began in Riviera Beach and concluded in Hobe Sound, just outside Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Along the way, Turner collided with two vehicles: a 2020 Land Rover driven by a 63-year-old woman from Jupiter and a 2017 BMW driven by a 39-year-old woman from Brookhaven, Georgia. Two young boys, ages 3 and 6, were also in the BMW.
Law Enforcement Response
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek emphasized the duty of law enforcement to protect the public, stating, “If you see a guy traveling the wrong way on the road, you have a duty to stop that person.” The chase was initiated after two on-duty Border Patrol agents spotted Turner driving toward them and alerted local authorities.
Despite the tragic outcome, Sheriff Budensiek expressed relief that no innocent civilians lost their lives. The Florida Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident to understand the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
