Maricopa County, Arizona, has initiated a new pilot program designed to help tenants avoid eviction. This eviction diversion initiative specifically targets Phoenix zip codes with the highest eviction filings, aiming to identify and assist residents at risk of losing their homes.
Collaboration for Community Stability
The program represents a collaborative effort involving justice courts, landlords, and community partners to find alternatives to eviction. This initiative is modeled after the Texas Eviction Diversion Program and involves a partnership with the City of Phoenix.
According to Board of Supervisors Chair Kate Brophy McGee, Maricopa County Justice Courts have processed over 80,000 eviction filings annually for the past three years. This staggering number highlights the urgent need for intervention, as many individuals and families face the brink of homelessness.
Record-Breaking Eviction Filings
In 2024, Maricopa County reported a record-breaking 87,197 eviction filings, surpassing a previous high set in 2005. This alarming trend underscores the importance of the new program in providing much-needed relief and support to vulnerable residents.
Additionally, the county offers a rental assistance program for households outside the boundaries of Phoenix, Mesa, and Glendale, further supporting those in need.
