Japan’s weather agency warned residents of destructive gusts as medium‑strength Typhoon Saudel approached the southwestern islands of Okinawa prefecture. The storm is moving slowly at about 20 kph (12 mph) with maximum sustained winds of 162 kph and gusts up to 216 kph.
Warnings for Japan
Authorities urged people in the affected areas to stay on high alert for landslides, flooding and rising rivers caused by heavy rainfall. Strong winds and high seas are also expected around Okinawa.
Impact on Taiwan
In Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration said Saudel will pass north of the island and begin dumping water on its northern region late Thursday into Friday. Separately, a tropical depression in southern and eastern Taiwan has already caused one death and left four people missing after flooding in the cities of Tainan and Kaohsiung.
Kaohsiung recorded nearly a metre (3.9 feet) of rain over three days, surpassing the rainfall from the 2009 Typhoon Morakot, which killed about 700 people and caused up to $3 billion in damage.
China’s coastal alert
China’s National Marine Environmental Forecasting Centre issued an orange alert—the second‑highest level—for high waves along the eastern Chinese province of Fujian. Waves of seven to twelve metres (23‑40 feet) are expected in the eastern East China Sea as Saudel approaches the coast late Thursday to early Friday.
Residents in the warned regions are advised to take precautions and monitor official updates as the storm progresses.
