Fairfax County nonprofit quietly supplies school essentials to thousands of students nationwide

When Ron Fitzsimmons was substituting at Mount Vernon High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, he saw a student in tears because she could not afford a prom ticket. He bought her a ticket and soon discovered that many teachers were already helping students in similar ways, but without a coordinated system.

From a single classroom to a national effort

Motivated by his own childhood experiences of poverty on Long Island, Fitzsimmons and his sister, Laura Fitzsimmons Peters, launched Alice’s Kids in 2011. The nonprofit began by serving a handful of schools in Northern Virginia, relying on a network of teachers and social workers who could flag students in need.

When a teacher or social worker identifies a child who lacks a yearbook, musical instrument lessons, soccer cleats, or other items that support self‑esteem, they submit a digital request. Within one or two days, Alice’s Kids issues a digital gift card—typically around $100—directly to the family, allowing the child to shop anonymously.

Anonymous aid preserves dignity

Fitzsimmons emphasizes that anonymity is a core principle. “The beauty of this is that the kid doesn’t know they’re getting charity,” he told WTOP. He believes that public displays of giving can stigmatize recipients, eroding their confidence and self‑worth.

Since gaining media attention, the organization has expanded far beyond the D.C. area. Last year it assisted roughly 14,000 children; this year the goal is to reach 20,000, handling 60 to 70 requests daily. The nonprofit operates on a $1.3 million budget, supported by a small staff, volunteers, and donations from public figures such as Steve Carell, Patton Oswalt, Kevin Bacon and Stephanie Courtney.

Impact on families and schools

For many families, the gift cards represent a first experience of independent shopping for school supplies or clothing. “Many of these kids have never been shopping before for their own clothes or school supplies,” Fitzsimmons said.

During the back‑to‑school season, Alice’s Kids allocated close to $70,000 to provide essential items, reinforcing the organization’s focus on education‑related needs rather than food or medical care.

Community response and future outlook

Teachers across the country have praised the program for its speed and discretion. By handling about 98 % of requests, the nonprofit demonstrates that a modest, well‑targeted effort can make a substantial difference in children’s lives.

Fitzsimmons hopes the model will inspire other communities to develop similar anonymous assistance networks, reducing the shame often associated with charitable aid. As the organization continues to scale, its commitment to preserving student dignity remains its guiding principle.
