At about 12:20 a.m. on August 8, Uber driver Anthony Baines was navigating the streets of the Houston Heights when a shirtless man sprinted across the road in front of his vehicle. Two Houston Police Department officers were in close pursuit, and one officer signaled Baines to stop and give her a ride.

According to dash‑cam footage obtained by Storyful, the officer approached Baines, opened the passenger door and climbed into the front seat, telling him, “Hey, give me a ride over there please. Go, go that way…” Baines asked for clarification on the direction, and the officer pointed him toward the suspect’s last known location.

After a short drive, the second officer, carrying a flashlight, opened the rear door and entered the back seat. Both officers rode with Baines for several minutes, scanning the neighborhood for the fleeing individual.

Suspect remains at large

When one officer finally spotted the suspect, both officers exited the Uber and continued the pursuit on foot. Baines could be heard exclaiming, “What the f—?!” as the officers leapt from his vehicle.

Houston police confirmed the video’s authenticity and explained that the officers were responding to a terroristic threat call. The call alleged that the suspect had threatened to shoot a woman and her children after becoming upset over a belief that someone had stolen from him.

Police attempted to detain the man as he left an apartment building, but he refused to cooperate and fled. An officer asked Baines to drive them around the block to the apartment complex, after which the officers returned to their patrol car. The suspect’s identity has not been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Driver’s background and reaction

Baines later confirmed on social media that he was the driver in the footage, posting, “Yep, that was me, the Uber driver whose dashcam caught two HPD officers jumping in my car to chase a suspect.” He described himself as an Army veteran, husband and father of two who began driving for Uber to help his family save for their first home.

“It caught me completely off guard,” Baines told Storyful. “I’ve never had anything like that happen while driving. I was surprised but just did what the officer asked in the moment.”

Police response

Houston Police Department officials confirmed the incident to KPRC 2, noting that while the officers were able to transport themselves briefly, they did not locate the suspect. The department continues to investigate the threat and the suspect’s whereabouts.
