Indianapolis police announced Tuesday that a man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred at a motel on the east side of the city earlier this month. Officers responded to the 6800 block of East 21st Street on August 10 after receiving a call about an ongoing shooting.
When officers arrived, they found 48‑year‑old Sheldon Roberts lying on the sidewalk outside the motel. Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) immediately launched a homicide investigation, employing its automatic license‑plate reader system to track vehicles that had been in the area at the time of the incident.

The license‑plate data, combined with other investigative techniques, pointed investigators toward a suspect named David Williams. Williams was taken into custody on August 22 while IMPD officers were serving a search warrant in an unrelated case. He is being held on a murder charge pending further review by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
The prosecutor’s office has not yet disclosed whether additional charges, such as aggravated assault or weapons violations, will be filed. Prosecutors will determine the appropriate charges after reviewing the evidence gathered by IMPD.
