Democratic professor Christina Bohannan makes third run for Iowa’s 1st Congressional District

In Columbus Junction, a small town in Louisa County, Democratic candidate Christina Bohannan addressed a handful of voters on Sunday, emphasizing the size of Iowa’s 1st Congressional District and the need for personal outreach. Bohannan, a 55‑year‑old law professor at the University of Iowa, is making her third attempt to unseat Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller‑Meeks, who has held the seat since 2020.

Past races and a tighter margin

Bohannan lost to Miller‑Meeks by 23,000 votes in 2022 and by a razor‑thin 799 votes in 2024, the second‑closest House race that year. The narrow loss prompted her campaign to expand its ground game, targeting rural counties she previously skipped and beginning door‑to‑door canvassing as early as January.

Campaign strategy and local concerns

The campaign’s volunteers now carry a personal letter from Bohannan when they knock on doors, aiming to connect with voters who feel overlooked. Residents like Cindy Starr, a retired social worker, and Tim Knutson, a retired meat‑packing manager, said they had never heard of a campaign event before the visit, highlighting the candidate’s effort to reach new audiences.

Bohannan’s platform stresses common‑sense fiscal policies, noting that “tax dollars are precious” and that excessive regulation can hinder economic growth. She draws on her upbringing in rural central Florida, her father’s work as a construction laborer, and her family’s past healthcare challenges to relate to constituents across the district’s mix of farms, small towns, and growing suburbs.

Rural versus urban dynamics

Iowa’s 1st District spans more than half of the state’s counties, many with fewer than 20,000 residents, and includes the urban centers of Iowa City in Johnson County and the Davenport‑Bettendorf area in Scott County. Bohannan captured over 70% of the vote in Johnson County in both 2022 and 2024 and narrowed the gap in Scott County, winning it narrowly in 2024 after losing it in 2022.

Her campaign hopes to maintain that momentum, especially as independent voters in Scott County have been shifting toward the Democratic side. Terry Olsen, vice chairman of the Scott County Democrats and a former Republican, noted a steady monthly increase in Democratic registrations, though Republicans still hold a slight edge.

National issues influencing the race

Bohannan argues that former President Donald Trump’s policies—particularly on inflation, trade tariffs affecting soybean sales, and recent tax‑cut legislation—have hurt local farmers and drivers who face high fuel costs. She also points to upcoming cuts to Medicaid funding, which could strain rural hospitals like MercyOne Clinton Medical Center, already planning to end obstetrics services in 2026.

Miller‑Meeks, a physician, defended her record, saying she has consistently supported patients over “big insurance companies and bureaucrats.” She highlighted the “common‑sense provisions” of recent legislation, asserting that Bohannan would have favored subsidies for large insurers.

Looking ahead

With the 2026 midterm election approaching, Bohannan’s intensified outreach and early start aim to convert the narrow 2024 loss into a victory. The race remains a focal point for both parties, as control of the U.S. House could hinge on competitive districts like Iowa’s 1st.
