The QCA Patriot Guard Riders, a dedicated group known for their unwavering support of service members and first responders, are facing a challenge familiar to many volunteer organizations: an aging membership. This was evident during Bettendorf’s Memorial Day Ceremony, where the group had a strong presence but acknowledged the need for fresh faces to join their ranks.
Honoring Service and Sacrifice
Steve Tondi, a committed volunteer with the Patriot Guard, highlighted the group’s mission to assist service members and first responders whenever called upon. ‘We’ve even built ramps and helped raise money for broken down vehicles,’ Tondi shared, emphasizing the group’s dedication beyond ceremonial duties.
Participation in flag lines and other honors is a significant part of their activities. Tondi reflected on the impact of their presence at funerals, stating, ‘If you attend one funeral, and you have one family member tell you how much it meant to them? It’s worth it.’
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite their commitment, the group faces challenges with fewer members able to participate in missions due to age. ‘Without question, we need more volunteers,’ Tondi noted, pointing out the physical demands that come with their duties.
However, there is hope in the form of younger participants. Maddie Rodenburg, along with her sisters Aubrey and Kira, are part of Kids for Vets, an initiative that supports veterans through activities like lemonade stands. Maddie, who plans to join the Air Force, expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to stand alongside the Patriot Guard, saying, ‘To be around them and get to hear their stories and whatnot, it’s really nice.’
The involvement of young volunteers like Maddie is crucial for the continuation of the Patriot Guard’s mission. Tondi expressed gratitude for their participation, acknowledging the physical relief they provide to older members.
Continuing the Legacy
Maddie, who is preparing for basic training, expressed her desire to continue supporting the Patriot Guard whenever possible. ‘It’s just a wonderful experience and thing to be able to go and serve these guys who have once served us,’ she said.
