UTSA begins fall semester for 42,000 students after cyberattack delay

San Antonio – Over 42,000 students are attending the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) this Monday as the fall semester gets underway, despite an attempted cyberattack that forced the university to postpone the original start date.

The university reported that the security incident prompted a campus‑wide password reset for students, faculty and staff. UTSA officials advised everyone to create unique, strong passwords and to change them regularly. “What I’ve done is change my password recently and not have all the same passwords for my info,” sophomore David Soza said. “That’s the fastest way you can do it.”

Students and faculty respond to the delay

Many students said the brief delay gave them extra time to locate classrooms and finalize their schedules. “I really wasn’t worried because I have different passwords, and I was changing it every semester,” said freshman Samantha Trevino. Another student, Ava Hermes, added, “Anytime I get a security alert, I go ahead and change all my passwords to make sure they’re impenetrable.”

While most students expressed confidence in their personal security habits, some professors voiced concern that the postponed start could disrupt syllabi and lesson plans. The university’s IT department continues to monitor systems to ensure no further intrusion occurs.

Growth on campus

UTSA is also welcoming 90 new full‑time faculty members this term and launching ten new degree programs, including offerings in health sciences, film and media, and politics and law. The expansion reflects the university’s commitment to meeting regional workforce needs and providing more options for local families.

Earlier this year, UTSA experienced a similar alert that delayed final exams in May. Cybersecurity experts note that college students are often targeted for identity theft, underscoring the importance of strong digital hygiene.

Other San Antonio schools start on time

Other higher‑education institutions in the area—Trinity University, Texas A&M University‑San Antonio, Alamo Colleges, and the University of the Incarnate Word—are also beginning their fall semesters on Monday without reported delays.

University leaders encourage students and staff to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activity, and take advantage of campus resources on cyber safety. The prompt response to the attempted attack demonstrates UTSA’s dedication to protecting its academic community while delivering a full slate of educational opportunities for the coming year.
