Enes Kanter Freedom Ejected After Confrontation at Chicago WNBA Game

Chicago – During the third quarter of the Indiana Fever‑Chicago Sky matchup at Wintrust Arena on Sunday night, former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom was escorted out of the arena following a confrontation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud.

Freedom, who was seated along the baseline, wore a black shirt that read “WOMAN noun. adult human female.” The Sky called a timeout with 1:22 left in the third quarter after Cloud scored inside. Following the play, Cloud approached Freedom, raised her voice, and pointed in his direction. Freedom responded by holding his arms and taking a step onto the court.

Security personnel and several Sky players intervened, creating a physical barrier between the two. The situation escalated quickly, prompting arena officials to eject Freedom from the court area. As he left, Freedom displayed his shirt to onlookers and spoke briefly with a group of police officers stationed near the lobby before exiting the venue.

Freedom and former NBA teammate Royce White have both announced that they consider themselves eligible for the WNBA draft, stating they identify as women. Their declarations have drawn attention from the league, fans, and media outlets across the country.

The incident raises questions about how professional sports leagues will handle eligibility claims based on gender identity, especially when those claims intersect with traditional definitions of competition categories. While the WNBA has not issued an official statement regarding Freedom’s eligibility, league officials have indicated that any draft eligibility must comply with existing league rules and policies.

Reactions from the Community

Local fans expressed a range of reactions on social media. Some praised the Sky’s quick response to maintain order, while others called for clearer guidelines from the league on gender‑identity participation. A spokesperson for the Chicago Sky declined to comment on the specifics of the altercation but reaffirmed the team’s commitment to a safe and respectful environment for players, staff, and spectators.

City officials, including Chicago’s mayor’s office, have not weighed in on the incident, noting that it falls under the jurisdiction of the league and the arena’s security protocols.

What This Means for Future Draft Eligibility

The situation underscores a broader national conversation about gender identity, parental rights, and the role of sports governing bodies in defining eligibility criteria. As more athletes publicly identify outside traditional gender categories, leagues may need to revisit their policies to balance inclusion with competitive fairness.

For now, the WNBA’s next steps remain uncertain. The league is expected to review its bylaws and may issue guidance before the upcoming draft deadline later this month.
