Protests Erupt Over Conditions at New Jersey ICE Facility

In Newark, New Jersey, tensions have escalated at Delaney Hall, an ICE detention facility, following protests and reports of a hunger strike by detainees. The facility, operated by GEO Group, has become a focal point for allegations of subpar living conditions.

Protests and Political Reactions

Over the weekend, protesters clashed with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents outside the facility. The skirmish involved attempts to block the transfer of detainee Martin Alonso Soto Hernandez, who is charged with assault. His wife had organized a rally announcing a hunger strike at Delaney Hall, drawing attention to the conditions inside.

New Jersey politicians, including US Sen. Andy Kim and Gov. Mikie Sherrill, have expressed concern over the facility’s conditions. Kim reported witnessing poor conditions during a visit, including congealed milk and lack of medical care for female detainees. Sherrill, disturbed by these reports, has called for the closure of the detention center, emphasizing the need to treat all individuals with dignity.

ICE and DHS Response

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has refuted these claims, stating that detainees receive adequate meals, clean water, and comprehensive medical care. Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis dismissed the allegations as political stunts by local politicians.

DHS reported that approximately 125 protesters surrounded Delaney Hall, forming a human chain and blocking entrances. The situation escalated when protesters attempted to prevent the transfer of Soto Hernandez, leading to a confrontation with federal agents.

Ongoing Oversight and Advocacy

Sen. Cory Booker and other lawmakers have pledged to continue oversight efforts. Booker described the conditions as deplorable and vowed to work with state partners to address the issues. Meanwhile, Congressman Rob Menendez Jr. was initially denied access for an oversight visit but later visited Soto Hernandez at another facility.

The situation at Delaney Hall highlights ongoing debates over immigration enforcement and detainee treatment, with local and national implications as officials and activists continue to advocate for change.
