Santa Maria Honors Fallen Heroes with Memorial Day Events

In Santa Maria, California, the community came together to honor the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for our nation’s freedom during several Memorial Day events. The ceremonies, held at the Santa Maria Cemetery and other locations along the Central Coast, served as a poignant reminder of the cost of liberty.

Honoring the Fallen

Colonel James T. Horne III, commander at Vandenberg Space Force Base, addressed attendees at the Santa Maria Cemetery, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by members of the U.S. Armed Forces. ‘The importance of Memorial Day is that we recognize those that gave their all and sacrificed their lives for the freedom that we have today,’ Colonel Horne stated.

He urged the community to pause and reflect on the service of these individuals and the families who continue to mourn their loss. ‘It’s very important that we pause for a moment, reflect on their service, reflect on the families that today still mourn the loss of the men and women that have served for our country and remember their sacrifice,’ he added.

Personal Connections

For many attendees, the day held personal significance. Steve Reyburn of the Santa Maria Elks Lodge shared his family’s military history, noting that his father, grandfather, uncle, and aunt’s brother all served in the armed forces. ‘It hits home a little bit,’ Reyburn remarked, highlighting the personal connections many have to those who served.

During the ceremony, Colonel Horne presented a certificate of special recognition to 102-year-old veteran Lucille Manson, a World War II veteran and mother of Orcutt’s Chef Rick. Manson’s service in Europe and her role as a military spouse were celebrated as part of the day’s events.

Community-Wide Observance

In addition to the cemetery ceremony, other events took place across the Central Coast, including a pause in pre-rodeo operations at the Elks Rodeo Grounds to mark the holiday. Reyburn expressed gratitude for veterans and their families, acknowledging their sacrifices as the foundation of the freedoms enjoyed today. ‘I appreciate all veterans and their families for all that they’ve sacrificed,’ he said. ‘And, thank God for them. That’s why we have the freedoms that we have today.’
