Chinese Humanoid Robots Break Human Sprint and High‑Jump Records at Beijing Games

Beijing hosted the opening of the World Humanoid Robot Games on Saturday, showcasing rapid advances in Chinese robotics. More than 2,000 humanoid robots participated in 51 events ranging from sprinting to table tennis.

In a headline‑grabbing 100‑meter dash, a robot from Beijing‑based X‑Humanoid completed the race in 9.39 seconds, beating the human record of 9.58 seconds set by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt in 2009. The same manufacturer’s robot also cleared a standing high jump of 2.88 meters, surpassing the human record of 2.45 meters held by Cuba’s Javier Sotomayor since 1993.

Earlier trial runs saw a robot from Chinese smartphone maker Honor post a 9.32‑second sprint, reaching a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second. Organizers highlighted these achievements as evidence of China’s growing dominance in the global humanoid‑robot market.

Broader Context and U.S. Response

The games coincide with the 2026 World Robot Conference, where roughly 3,000 products were displayed. While China produces the majority of the world’s humanoid robots, the United States has recently tightened scrutiny. The Federal Communications Commission announced a ban on imports of new foreign‑made humanoid robots for national‑security reasons, specifically targeting Chinese units. The Pentagon also added leading Chinese robot maker Unitree to a list of companies with alleged military ties.

Chinese officials have dismissed the accusations, emphasizing the peaceful, research‑focused nature of the technology.

Public Reaction

Spectators expressed a mix of awe and cautious optimism. Li Yanfeng, a Beijing resident who works in education, admitted she was initially resistant to artificial intelligence but now sees the progress as “unstoppable.” Yang Shangzheng called the performances “amazing,” while Liu Tao, attending with his son, hoped to see “the best robots China currently has to offer.”

Experts cautioned that despite the impressive demonstrations, humanoid robots remain primarily for research, performance and limited commercial use. Widespread real‑world deployment will likely take years.

International Participation

The five‑day event features teams from 16 countries, including Germany, Japan and the United States, competing in weightlifting, tug‑of‑war and other traditional sports adapted for robots.
