Health officials warn of salmonella and E. coli outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts sold in 15 states

Public‑health agencies are sounding the alarm after a multi‑state outbreak of salmonella and E. coli infections was traced to alfalfa sprouts produced by Everything Sprouts, a grower based in Minnesota. The outbreak, which has affected 15 states, has sickened at least 55 individuals, four of whom required hospitalization.

What the numbers show

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 46 people tested positive for E. coli, seven were infected with salmonella, and two individuals were diagnosed with both pathogens. Illness onset dates range from May 31 to August 8, and officials believe the true count of affected persons may be higher than reported.

Source of the contamination

Minnesota’s Department of Health identified alfalfa sprouts sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands as the common link among the cases. The sprouts were distributed to restaurants and grocery stores across the nation. Health officials are urging anyone who purchased these products to check the packaging, refrain from eating them, and discard them immediately.

FDA action and inspection findings

On August 19, the FDA conducted an inspection at Everything Sprouts’ facility and began collecting samples. Inspectors recommended that the company initiate a recall and warned retailers and consumers not to serve the contaminated sprouts.

The agency’s earlier inspection of the same facility last year uncovered “serious violations.” Inspectors reported unsanitary conditions that could have allowed produce to become contaminated with filth, including roof leaks that allowed water to drip onto the sprouts and employee smocks. They also noted a buildup of black organic matter on a hose in the overhead irrigation system.

What consumers should do

Both the FDA and CDC have posted official outbreak notices on their websites. Consumers who have purchased alfalfa sprouts bearing the Calco or Everything Sprouts label should:

  • Check the packaging for the brand name and production dates.
  • Do not eat or serve the sprouts.
  • Throw the product away or return it to the retailer for a refund.

Anyone who experiences symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, or vomiting after consuming these sprouts should seek medical attention promptly and inform their healthcare provider of the possible exposure.

Industry response

ABC News has reached out to Everything Sprouts for comment. The company has not yet issued a public statement regarding the current outbreak or the FDA’s recent inspection.

Food‑borne illness outbreaks underscore the importance of rigorous food‑safety standards and vigilant oversight. While the investigation continues, public‑health officials stress that prompt reporting and adherence to recall notices are essential to protecting families and communities.
