Potential Crack in California Chemical Tank May Prevent Explosion

A potential crack in a 7,000-gallon chemical tank at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, California, may be releasing pressure, potentially preventing a dangerous vapor explosion, officials reported. The tank contains methyl methacrylate, a toxic chemical used in manufacturing resins and plastics. Interim Orange County Fire Chief TJ McGovern stated that this development could alter the strategy to manage the situation.

Evacuations and Safety Measures

Concerns over a possible explosion led to evacuation orders affecting tens of thousands of residents, many of whom are currently in shelters. McGovern noted that if the crack is indeed releasing pressure, the threat of a BLEVE (boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion) might be averted. However, the risk of explosion remains, and if a BLEVE is still possible, the evacuation zone will need to be expanded.

Firefighters have been working tirelessly, using sprinklers and hose lines to cool the tank. During a recent operation, it was observed that the tank’s temperature gauge was at its maximum reading of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, suggesting actual temperatures could be higher.

Community Impact and Response

The potential explosion could also affect nearby tanks containing the same chemical, raising concerns about a larger incident. Division Chief Craig Covey emphasized the severity of the situation, describing it as potentially one of the worst chemical incidents in California history. The blast radius could extend up to half a mile, causing structural damage and dispersing toxic vapors.

Residents like Lydia Green and Eugene Smith have been displaced, staying in shelters or their cars. They expressed fear and frustration over the situation, highlighting the challenges of being without basic necessities and the threat to their homes.

Local shelters, supported by the American Red Cross, are nearing capacity as they accommodate evacuees. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency and requested federal assistance to support response operations.

Officials are committed to ensuring the safety of residents before allowing them to return home. McGovern assured that they are employing innovative strategies to resolve the crisis and prioritize the community’s safety.
