Trump Cautious on Iran Deal Amidst Republican Concerns

President Donald Trump has stated that he will not rush into a deal with Iran to end the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict, following concerns from senior Republican lawmakers about potential risks. Trump emphasized that “time is on our side” in a post on Truth Social, signaling a more cautious approach compared to earlier optimistic statements about a potential agreement.

Details of the Proposed Agreement

The framework of the potential deal, as outlined by a senior administration official, aims to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. It includes a 60-day period for negotiations to ensure the safety and prosperity of the United States and the region. The agreement would require Iran to relinquish enriched uranium, referred to by Trump as “nuclear dust,” and would involve reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial for global oil shipments.

However, Iranian state media has countered these claims, stating that the strait will only reopen if the U.S. lifts its naval blockade within the first 30 days of the deal. They also dispute the commitment to removing nuclear materials.

Republican Concerns and Diplomatic Efforts

Republican leaders, including Sen. Roger Wicker and Sen. Ted Cruz, have expressed skepticism about the deal, warning that trusting Iran to negotiate in good faith could be disastrous. They argue that the proposed ceasefire might undermine the objectives of Operation Epic Fury, the military campaign initiated in February.

Despite these concerns, diplomatic efforts continue. Trump has engaged in discussions with leaders from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and other regional allies, receiving support for his diplomatic approach. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar have praised Trump’s leadership in seeking a peaceful resolution.

Trump also held a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which he described as positive. The president remains firm in his stance that any deal must be beneficial and has criticized those who prematurely judge the negotiations.

The conflict, which began with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, has resulted in significant casualties and financial costs. As negotiations progress, the administration seeks a resolution that ensures regional stability and addresses the concerns of both American and Iranian officials.
