TxDOT unveils major Loop 410 and San Pedro upgrades to ease San Antonio traffic

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is moving forward with a multi‑year road‑improvement project that will reshape a key traffic corridor on San Antonio’s north side. The plan covers 4.3 miles of Loop 410 between West Avenue and Broadway and 2.7 miles of U.S. Highway 281 between Loop 410 and East Nakoma Drive, an area that includes the North Star Mall and the San Antonio International Airport.

Safety and congestion concerns

TxDOT officials say the corridor experiences a high volume of traffic and a crash rate well above the state average. Between 2014 and 2018, the project area averaged 3.7 crashes per day, prompting the agency to prioritize safety upgrades. Without intervention, projected morning commute times could double by 2045, while evening trips might take up to four times longer than they do today.

Planned improvements

The project will remove seven existing ramps and replace them with new, better‑designed access points. Several intersections along Loop 410 and US‑281 will be reconfigured to improve traffic flow and reduce weaving. These changes are intended to lower crash frequency, ease bottlenecks, and provide a more reliable travel experience for daily commuters and airport travelers.

Public involvement

TxDOT’s planning process included a feasibility study and a period for public input. To keep residents informed, the agency will host a stakeholder open house on August 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The meeting will present project details, construction timelines, and opportunities for community feedback. Residents can also sign up for email updates on the project’s webpage or direct questions to [email protected].

Impact on local neighborhoods

The work will affect neighborhoods in both San Antonio and the adjacent city of Castle Hills. While construction may cause temporary disruptions, TxDOT expects the long‑term benefits—reduced crashes, shorter travel times, and smoother airport access—to outweigh short‑term inconveniences.

Looking ahead

Funding for the project comes from state transportation allocations, and TxDOT plans to begin construction after the public‑comment period closes. The agency emphasizes that the upgrades are part of a broader effort to modernize Texas’s highway system while preserving the safety and mobility of local families and businesses.
