Oxford Reopens Loughlin Road, Marks Progress in Flood Recovery

In a significant stride towards recovery, the town of Oxford, Connecticut, has reopened Loughlin Road, which was severely damaged during the 2024 floods. This marks a major milestone in the town’s ongoing efforts to rebuild and fortify its infrastructure against future natural disasters.

Community Resilience and Federal Support

Oxford’s First Selectman, George Temple, highlighted the extensive damage Loughlin Road sustained, describing it as a challenging repair project. ‘It really took out half of the mountain so that had to be replaced,’ Temple explained, emphasizing the scale of the destruction.

The reopening of the road comes after meticulous engineering efforts to design a new embankment, aimed at enhancing the road’s resilience to future storms. ‘That’s basically what my goal was, that we make repairs and that they’re permanent,’ Temple stated, reflecting the community’s determination to build back stronger.

Support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been crucial in these efforts. Oxford received more than $273,000 in federal aid for guardrail and embankment repairs, similar to the work completed on Loughlin Road. In total, the town has secured about $3 million in federal recovery funding so far.

Honoring Community Spirit and Loss

Temple praised the community’s spirit and willingness to contribute to the recovery efforts. ‘This town has a big heart too and they’re not afraid to roll up their sleeves. I can’t tell you how many people were involved in putting this back together again,’ he said, acknowledging the collective effort of local residents.

Amidst the progress, Temple also took a moment to remember the two lives lost during the flooding, Ethelyn Joiner and Audrey Rostkowski. ‘We grieve over that. We have a memorial for them and I know I’ll never forget them,’ he expressed, underscoring the personal impact of the disaster on the community.

As Oxford continues its journey towards full recovery, the reopening of Loughlin Road stands as a testament to the town’s resilience and the effective collaboration between local efforts and federal support.
