Stampede at South Carolina Bike Festival Leaves 19 Injured

The Black Pearl Cultural Heritage and Bike Festival in Atlantic Beach, South Carolina, experienced an unexpected stampede early Sunday morning, leaving 19 attendees injured. The incident occurred near a stage area along South Ocean Boulevard at approximately 1:05 a.m., according to Horry County Fire Rescue.

Emergency Response and Safety Measures

Emergency crews, already present at the event, quickly responded to the situation. Horry County Fire Rescue declared a mass casualty incident to efficiently coordinate the emergency response, ensuring that all injured individuals received prompt attention. Of the 19 evaluated, three were transported to the hospital, while others may have sought medical care independently.

In a statement, the Town of Atlantic Beach expressed concern for those affected, emphasizing the seriousness with which they treat incidents where individuals are harmed. The town assured that there were no confirmed fights, weapons, or direct threats to public safety during the festival.

Festival’s Longstanding Tradition and Safety Review

The Black Pearl Cultural Heritage and Bike Festival, held annually over Memorial Day weekend, has been a staple event for over 40 years, drawing visitors from across the country. Despite the incident, town officials highlighted the festival’s overall success and positive reputation.

To prevent future incidents, officials plan to review the event with public safety partners to identify potential safety improvements. Crowd-control measures had already been implemented, including temporarily suspending incoming traffic into Atlantic Beach during the festival weekend.

The festival, which attracts crowds exceeding 400,000, coincides with the broader Myrtle Beach-area Memorial Day weekend activities, featuring concerts, parties, and other entertainment events.
