San Antonio welcomed a new hospitality option this month when the Residence Inn by Marriott Riverwalk opened its doors at 100 N. Main Ave. The 10‑story, extended‑stay hotel adds a modern lodging choice to the historic heart of downtown, directly across from the San Fernando Cathedral and within walking distance of Main Plaza, the Bexar County Courthouse and the upcoming Missions ballpark site.
Features aimed at long‑term guests
Designed for stays of 30 days or more, each room includes a fully equipped kitchenette, on‑site laundry, a fitness center and a 500‑square‑foot meeting space. Nightly rates range from $179 to $229, depending on room size and season. Guests can park with valet service or use the nearby City Tower garage for $10 a day.
General manager Corina Lathan, a lifelong hotel professional, said the property already hosted two bridal parties and expects to serve business travelers, visiting families and military personnel. “We wanted a home‑away‑from‑home that reflects the community,” Lathan said, noting that the lobby décor—Talavera pottery, punched‑tin wall panels, handcrafted muñecas de trapo and local sour candy—was sourced from San Antonio artisans. She recommends nearby Market Square for souvenirs and Mi Tierra Café y Panadería for a taste of the city.
Connecting downtown districts
The hotel sits at a crossroads of San Antonio’s traditional tourism corridor and the emerging Downtown West area. Connie Garza, director of urban strategy and analytics at Centro San Antonio, explained that the opening helps fill a gap that has long separated Main Plaza and Commerce Street from the River Walk and the western side of downtown. “We’re seeing those missing pieces come together, creating an opportunity to make this part of downtown just as appealing to residents and workers as it is to visitors,” Garza said.
Other projects contributing to the revitalization include the University of Texas at San Antonio’s expansion, the Alameda Theater restoration, new residential developments such as Continental Residences, and a wave of new restaurants and retail spaces.
Development background
The brick‑faced hotel was built on the site of the historic Wolfson Building, which burned down in 2011. Developed through a joint venture between Peachtree Group and Merritt Development Group, the design pays homage to San Antonio’s architectural heritage while providing modern amenities. Since its July 22 opening, the Residence Inn reports a 42 % occupancy rate.
With five extended‑stay hotels now operating in downtown San Antonio—including the nearby Element by Marriott—the market is expanding to meet the needs of travelers seeking longer stays without sacrificing comfort or local flavor.
