Texas university launches civic leadership school to teach history, Constitution and economics

In Austin, the University of Texas announced a new School of Civic Leadership designed to restore a pre‑partisan study of American history, constitutional government and economics. Dean Justin Dyer said the program’s purpose is to equip graduates—whether they pursue business, medicine, law or public service—with the knowledge needed to evaluate policy debates responsibly.

Why a new civic curriculum?

Recent elections in New York, Michigan and Minnesota have seen a surge of support for Democratic Socialist candidates, especially among younger, college‑educated voters. Analysts note that while these voters are well‑educated, many lack a deep understanding of how the nation’s economic and political institutions function. Critics argue that higher education has focused on debate without first teaching the fundamentals of the system.

Three pillars of the program

The UT Austin school rests on three pillars: history, constitutionalism and economics. History provides context for the ideas and events that shaped the American experiment. Constitutionalism teaches how the Republic’s institutions operate. Economics explains how incentives, markets and institutions drive prosperity and public policy. Together, they form a framework that allows students to assess policy outcomes based on cost, benefit and efficiency rather than ideology.

Economics at the center

While many civic‑education programs give prominence to history and government, economics often receives less attention. The new school argues that a solid grasp of economic reasoning is essential for citizens who vote, borrow, pay taxes and live with the consequences of public policy. Proper economic analysis begins with questions of causality—what policies achieve desired results—and efficiency—how to achieve those results at the lowest societal cost.

According to a Gallup poll cited in the discussion, only about one‑quarter of students who began college in 2012 received any college‑level economics instruction. The school’s leaders contend that without this foundation, graduates cannot meaningfully participate in debates about taxation, regulation or social welfare programs.

Broader implications

Proponents see the initiative as a response to a perceived “collapse” of faith in higher education, suggesting that a return to core civic knowledge will help counter the growing appeal of socialist ideas among educated youth. By teaching the incentives that drive capitalism, the program hopes to provide a factual counterpoint to ideological narratives.

The School of Civic Leadership is not intended to produce historians or economists alone; rather, it aims to prepare informed citizens who can steward America’s institutions responsibly, regardless of their career path.

Looking ahead

If the model proves successful, other universities may adopt similar curricula, emphasizing a balanced, fact‑based approach to civic education. Supporters argue that such programs are essential for preserving liberty and ensuring that future voters understand the constitutional and economic foundations of the United States.
