Man Fatally Shot Outside White House Had Prior Incidents with Secret Service

Nasire Best, a 21-year-old man, was shot and killed by Secret Service agents outside the White House on Saturday. Best, who had a history of mental health concerns, approached a checkpoint and began firing at officers, prompting the agents to return fire. A bystander was also injured during the exchange.

Previous Encounters with Law Enforcement

Best was known to the Secret Service due to multiple encounters near the White House. Court records reveal that he had been involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital and had previously been arrested by local police after claiming to be Jesus Christ. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement when dealing with individuals experiencing mental health crises.

According to a court affidavit, Best had been seen walking around the White House complex last summer, inquiring about access at various entry points. On June 26, 2025, he was involuntarily committed after obstructing vehicle entry to the White House complex. Just a few weeks later, on July 10, 2025, Best ignored warning signs and entered a restricted area outside the White House, where he was confronted by multiple officers. During this encounter, he again claimed to be Jesus Christ and expressed a desire to be arrested.

Social Media Posts Raise Concerns

Best’s social media activity also raised red flags, as he made posts that appeared to threaten violence against President Trump and claimed to be the son of God. These posts, combined with his erratic behavior, underscore the importance of addressing mental health issues and ensuring that individuals receive the support they need.

President Trump was in the White House at the time of the incident but was unharmed. The Secret Service continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and Best’s prior interactions with law enforcement.
