Missouri State University’s baseball team, under the guidance of Coach Joey Hawkins, has made significant strides in their first season within Conference USA (C-USA). Despite a 7-5 loss to Liberty in the semifinals of the C-USA Tournament, the Bears have secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament, marking a successful transition from the Missouri Valley Conference.
Competitive Edge in C-USA
The move to C-USA has proven beneficial for Missouri State, offering a higher level of competition compared to their previous conference. C-USA ranks as the nation’s ninth-best baseball league, a substantial step up from the Missouri Valley Conference’s 25th position. This shift has allowed the Bears to enhance their performance and prepare for the challenges of the NCAA Tournament.
Coach Hawkins, a strong advocate for the move to C-USA, emphasized the benefits of facing tougher opponents. “We’re grateful for the transition. It’s been tough. It’s a really hard league,” Hawkins noted, highlighting the rigorous competition that has helped the team improve.
Strong Season Performance
The Bears have shown resilience throughout the season, with a commendable record of 34-19. They have faced a challenging nonconference schedule and emerged victorious against formidable teams like Arkansas, Oklahoma State, and Louisiana. Their performance has earned them an impressive RPI of No. 23, the best among C-USA teams.
Junior third baseman Curry Sutherland, a local talent from Logan-Rogersville High School, expressed the team’s readiness for the NCAA Tournament. “We’ve got to see a lot better competition throughout the year, a lot better pitching, and the team just feels more prepared,” Sutherland said.
Looking Ahead
As the Bears prepare for the NCAA Tournament, they hope for a regional assignment that allows fans to travel easily. Potential locations include Kansas, Nebraska, or Arkansas, where the team has a rich history of NCAA matchups.
The NCAA Tournament selection show will air on Monday at 11 a.m. on ESPN2, where Missouri State will learn their regional destination. Regardless of the outcome, the Bears’ journey this season has been a testament to their hard work and adaptability in a new, more competitive environment.
