In a heartfelt recognition of bravery and dedication, Officer Elyse Hand of the Jacksonville Police Department has been awarded the 2026 Hometown Hero Award. This honor, presented by U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs of the Eastern District of Texas, acknowledges Officer Hand’s courage during a dangerous encounter in the line of duty.
Bravery in Action
On November 2, 2025, Officer Hand was shot twice while attempting to apprehend a wanted fugitive, Bobby Michael Dennis. The incident, which left her with injuries to her arm and leg, also resulted in her K-9 unit, Renzo, being injured. Despite these challenges, Officer Hand’s commitment to her role and community remains unwavering.
Supported by her husband, a Texas State Trooper, and their young son, Officer Hand is currently recovering from two surgeries. Her story is a testament to the resilience and dedication of law enforcement officers who face dangers to protect their communities.
Honoring Service and Sacrifice
The Hometown Hero Award, sponsored by the Department of Justice, celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence by recognizing law enforcement officers who embody the ideals of liberty, service, and civic responsibility. Officer Hand’s recognition highlights the daily sacrifices made by officers nationwide.
In conjunction with the award, the U.S. Attorney’s Office organized a gift-in-kind charity drive to support local child advocacy centers. These centers, located throughout the Eastern District of Texas, provide crucial services to children in need. The centers include the Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County, Grayson County Children’s Advocacy Center, Texarkana Children’s Advocacy Center, Children’s Advocacy Center of Smith County, Harold’s House East Texas Alliance for Children, and the Garth House in Beaumont.
Officer Hand’s story not only highlights the bravery of law enforcement but also underscores the importance of community support and the enduring values of service and responsibility.
