Oklahoma City hits 109°F, marking the hottest day of 2026

Oklahoma City experienced its hottest day of the year on Tuesday, reaching a scorching 109°F. The temperature tied the city’s all‑time high for the calendar date, surpassing the previous record of 106°F set on August 18, 1918.

Historical context of extreme heat

This 109°F reading is the highest temperature recorded in Oklahoma City since July 19, 2022. It also marks the latest day in the calendar year that the city has ever logged a high of 109°F or higher; the prior latest occurrence was August 12, 1936, a summer noted for being the fourth‑hottest on record.

Since 2011, Oklahoma City has reached 109°F or higher on 13 occasions. Five of those came in 2011, another five in 2012, one in 2018, and one in 2022. The Tuesday reading is the first such extreme temperature in 2026.

Summer heat trends

To date, the 2026 summer has already produced 22 days with highs of 100°F or above. The only recent summer with more such days was 2022, which recorded 24 days of 100°F+ temperatures. Meteorologists expect the count to rise further before the week ends.

These numbers reflect a broader pattern of increasing heat events in the region. Over the past decade, the frequency of days reaching 100°F or higher has risen, placing additional strain on utilities, public health resources, and vulnerable residents.

Local response and resources

The KOCO 5 First Alert Weather Team, led by Chief Meteorologist Damon Lane, continues to provide up‑to‑date forecasts and safety guidance. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and check on neighbors who may be at risk, especially the elderly and those with health conditions.

City officials have reminded the public that cooling centers remain open at designated locations throughout the city. The Oklahoma City Department of Health also advises people to watch for signs of heat‑related illness, such as dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and confusion.

Looking ahead

With the forecast indicating continued high temperatures for the remainder of the week, Oklahoma City officials anticipate that the total number of 100°F+ days will exceed the current 22. Residents are encouraged to follow local weather updates, heed heat‑safety recommendations, and prepare for the possibility of additional extreme heat events as climate patterns evolve.
