Arkansas Boosts Impaired‑Driving Checks Through Labor Day

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — Beginning Friday, Aug. 21, state troopers and local police departments across Arkansas will intensify patrols to spot drivers under the influence of alcohol. The effort will run through Labor Day and is tied to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, which concludes on Sept. 7.

Why the crackdown matters

The campaign targets a period that historically sees a spike in traffic fatalities. During the 2024 Labor Day holiday weekend, the NHTSA reported 505 deaths in traffic crashes nationwide, with 170 (34%) involving a drunken driver. Among drivers aged 18 to 34 who died in crashes that weekend, 40% had blood‑alcohol concentrations of 0.08 or higher.

Officials urge safe‑travel plans

Arkansas Public Safety Secretary Col. Mike Hagar reminded residents that if alcohol is part of Labor Day celebrations, transportation plans should be made before the first drink. “Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or call someone you trust,” Hagar said.

Law‑enforcement officials also encouraged friends to intervene when a peer appears impaired. Taking the keys and arranging a safe ride can prevent tragedies before they happen. Motorists who encounter a suspected impaired driver are advised to keep a safe distance and contact police when it is safe to do so.

What drivers can expect

During the enforcement window, officers will conduct standard sobriety checkpoints, increased patrols on major highways, and random breath‑testing stops. The focus is on visibility and deterrence, aiming to remind drivers that impaired‑driving violations will be enforced rigorously.

Those found with a blood‑alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher face the usual penalties under Arkansas law, including license suspension, fines, and possible jail time. First‑time offenders may also be required to attend an alcohol‑education program.

Community impact

The heightened enforcement aligns with broader public‑safety goals to protect families and preserve the freedom to travel safely during one of the nation’s busiest holiday periods. By reducing impaired‑driving incidents, the state hopes to lower the number of crash‑related injuries and fatalities that affect parents, children, and the broader community.

Residents are encouraged to share the message with friends and family, reinforcing the idea that personal responsibility on the road is a shared value rooted in respect for life and the Constitution’s guarantee of personal safety.

Looking ahead

While the Drive Sober campaign ends on Sept. 7, Arkansas law‑enforcement agencies say they will continue to monitor impaired‑driving trends throughout the summer and into the fall. The public‑safety message remains clear: plan ahead, stay sober behind the wheel, and help keep Arkansas roads safe for everyone.
