Jim Schwartzel wins GOP nod for Florida’s 19th District despite Trump endorsement of opponent

In a closely watched GOP primary for Florida’s 19th Congressional District, local media executive Jim Schwartzel emerged as the Republican nominee to succeed Rep. Byron Donalds. Schwartzel’s victory came despite former President Donald Trump publicly endorsing his opponent, Catalina Lauf, just days before the election.

Trump endorsement fails to sway voters

On August 13, President Trump announced his support for Lauf, a former Department of Commerce official who previously ran for Congress twice in Illinois before moving to Southwest Florida. The endorsement was expected to give Lauf a decisive advantage, as Ballotpedia notes that 97% of candidates backed by the former president have won their primaries since mid‑July.

Nevertheless, Schwartzel captured the nomination on Tuesday night, signaling a rare break in the trend of Trump‑endorsed candidates prevailing in primary contests.

Candidate backgrounds and campaign themes

Schwartzel, a Florida‑based media executive who owns several local television stations, framed the race as a test of local representation. He criticized Lauf for her out‑of‑state political history, calling her a “carpetbagger” and emphasizing his own deep ties to the district.

Lauf responded by describing herself as a “blue‑state refugee” who chose to live in Florida, saying, “I came here, I didn’t have a choice to be born and raised in Illinois but I have a choice to live here.”

Other contenders

The primary field also featured former Rep. Madison Cawthorn, who lost his North Carolina seat after a series of scandals, former Rep. Chris Collins of New York, who was convicted of insider trading, and Jim Oberweis, a wealthy former Illinois state senator. National media outlets highlighted the eclectic lineup, with Axios dubbing the contest “the GOP’s carpetbagger primary” and noting its “circus‑like” atmosphere.

Campaign controversy

During the campaign, Lauf accused Schwartzel of influencing the dismissal of a popular local meteorologist. Schwartzel denied any ownership stake in the network that made the personnel decision, stating that his media holdings did not include the station in question.

After Trump’s endorsement, Schwartzel told supporters, “The president endorsed my opponent tonight. You’re hearing it from me before you hear it anywhere else. But let’s be precise about where that anger belongs – not with President Trump. I have supported him from the beginning and will continue to do so.” He added that the real source of frustration was “out‑of‑state super PACs that have poured millions into this district, Washington consultants who packaged a candidate who ran for Congress twice in Illinois and sold her as Southwest Florida’s choice.”

Implications for the district

Schwartzel’s win positions him to run in the November general election for a seat that has been held by Republicans since its creation. The result may signal that local voters are prioritizing district‑specific concerns over national endorsements, a trend that could influence future primary strategies in Florida and beyond.
