Python causes fire at Forest Middle School, damages classrooms

Firefighters responded to a nighttime alarm at Forest Middle School in Forest, Virginia, shortly after 12:45 a.m. on Thursday. The call turned out to be unusual: an eight‑foot python had escaped from its enclosure, toppled a heat lamp on the second floor, and ignited a small fire.

How the fire started

According to the Forest Fire Department, the reptile’s movement knocked the lamp onto a combustible surface, sparking flames that quickly spread to nearby ceiling tiles. The fire was contained before it could reach the building’s structural elements, but eight classrooms suffered water damage from the suppression effort.

Response and containment

Fire crews arrived within minutes, locating the python on the second floor. “Crews safely secured the python into a temporary holding area until the owner arrived and secured back in its original location and extinguished the fire,” the department posted on Facebook. The animal was later returned to its enclosure by its owner.

The fire marshal, speaking to WDBJ‑TV, noted that while the snake contributed to the blaze, there was no indication of malicious intent. “The snake contributed to starting the fire. However, I don’t think there was any maliciousness involved on the snake’s side,” he said.

Impact on the school

One tortoise, housed in the same classroom area, died in the fire, according to the local news outlet. The school was on summer break at the time, so no students or staff were present. Officials indicated that the incident will not affect the scheduled first day of classes for the upcoming school year.

District administrators are reviewing safety protocols for animal enclosures and heat‑lamp installations to prevent a repeat of this event. The school board plans to discuss the incident at its next meeting, emphasizing the importance of secure housing for any classroom‑based animals.

Community reaction

Parents and community members expressed concern over the safety of having live animals on campus. While many praised the quick response of firefighters and the fire department’s handling of the python, some called for stricter oversight of animal care programs in schools.

Local law enforcement and the fire marshal’s office are working with the school district to ensure that all safety measures comply with state regulations and that any future incidents are mitigated.

Looking ahead

Forest, Virginia, located about 40 miles east of Roanoke, is a small community that values its schools as central gathering places. The incident, though unusual, underscores the need for vigilant safety practices in educational settings.

School officials will continue to assess the damage, repair the affected classrooms, and keep families informed about any further steps needed before the school year begins.
