ACC and Big 12 Teams Position Themselves for National Title Run

The 2026 college football season arrives with heightened stakes for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Big 12. After years of struggling to compete with the Power Five’s traditional powerhouses, both leagues see this year as a chance to re‑establish themselves on the national stage.

ACC outlook

The ACC’s hopes hinge largely on Miami. The Hurricanes finished last season just short of a national championship, falling to Indiana in the College Football Playoff. While Miami did not win the conference championship game, its performance demonstrated that the program can contend with elite teams. Alongside Miami, Clemson remains a perennial threat, and Louisville, SMU, Pitt and Virginia have shown they can make deep runs in conference play.

If the Hurricanes capture the ACC title, they will secure the conference’s automatic bid to the playoff and improve the league’s chances of returning to the national championship game for the first time since Clemson’s 2018 victory.

Big 12 outlook

The Big 12’s narrative differs slightly. Texas Tech enters the season as the favorite, with BYU close behind. Last year, both teams entered the conference championship with only one loss each, creating genuine excitement about a possible national title run. Texas Tech’s loss to Oregon in the first playoff game and the subsequent controversy surrounding the league’s handling of the Brendan Sorsby incident highlighted the conference’s challenges.

Nevertheless, the Big 12 still boasts depth. While the middle of the pack often appears unsettled, the league’s reputation for high‑scoring offenses and competitive balance means any team could emerge as a contender. A conference championship would give the winner a stronger case for a playoff spot, something the league has not achieved since Kansas State’s 2003 appearance.

What a national title would mean

Winning a national championship would provide both conferences with a clear signal that they remain relevant in the ever‑intensifying conference arms race. It would also help stave off speculation that the ACC or Big 12 might eventually be absorbed or forced to realign like the former Pac‑12.

Beyond prestige, a championship brings financial benefits, increased recruiting leverage, and heightened media exposure for member schools. For fans, it restores confidence that their teams can compete with the likes of Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State.

Looking ahead

Early season polls and fan surveys will continue to shape expectations, but the true test will come on the field. As the ACC and Big 12 schedule their opening weeks, observers will watch for breakout performances, injury reports and the impact of new coaching strategies.

Both conferences have the talent and the motivation to break their respective droughts—eight years for the ACC and 21 years for the Big 12. Whether Miami, Clemson, Texas Tech or another program ultimately lifts the trophy remains to be seen, but the 2026 season promises to be a pivotal chapter in the quest for national relevance.
