Virginia Ali Honored with Catherine W. LeBlanc Legacy Award for 70 Years of DC Business and Community Service

The Washington, D.C. chapter of the National Black MBA Association announced that Mrs. Virginia Ali, co‑founder of the iconic Ben’s Chili Bowl, will receive the Catherine W. LeBlanc Legacy Award. The honor highlights Ali’s nearly seven decades of business leadership, community service and dedication to the city’s Black community.

Why the award matters

“Mrs. Virginia Ali is a sterling example of someone whose lifelong activities created history every day and whose commitment to service embodies the ideals that substantiate ‘legacy’ in an abiding way,” said Catherine W. LeBlanc, the award’s namesake. The award, created by Dr. Carletta S. Hurt, president of the DC Chapter, is intended to recognize women whose leadership has produced lasting, tangible benefits for their neighborhoods.

Ali’s impact on Washington, D.C.

Since opening Ben’s Chili Bowl in 1958, Ali has guided the restaurant through segregation, civil unrest, neighborhood disinvestment and massive construction on the U Street corridor. The eatery has grown beyond its original location, and the Ben’s Chili Bowl Foundation now supports youth empowerment, community partnerships and local nonprofit initiatives.

According to Dr. Hurt, “Mrs. Ali reminds us that Black business ownership is bigger than simply opening a business, it is about what we build around that business.” Ben’s has provided steady employment, preserved cultural heritage, and offered a gathering place where people from all walks of life can share a meal.

Community and economic legacy

Ali’s work exemplifies how entrepreneurship can serve as a vehicle for community building. By maintaining a family‑run restaurant that welcomes generations of Washingtonians, she has demonstrated a model of economic impact that extends into social impact. The foundation’s youth programs aim to equip the next generation with skills and confidence to pursue their own ventures.

“Acknowledging legacy is not only important as an expression of gratitude for services rendered to the persons honored, but more importantly, for showing succeeding generations of young people what is possible for them,” LeBlanc said, emphasizing the award’s forward‑looking purpose.

Looking ahead

Ali’s recognition comes at a time when the National Black MBA Association continues its mission to advance Black professionals, entrepreneurs and leaders throughout the DMV region. The award underscores the organization’s belief that honoring past achievements fuels future ambition.

For nearly seventy years, Virginia Ali has remained a steadfast presence on U Street, embodying the values of hard work, faith, family and freedom. Her story serves as a reminder that lasting legacies are built not only through personal success, but through the lasting benefits they create for neighbors, families and the broader community.
