25-year-old teacher arrested, accused of sexual misconduct with multiple students

Maris Nicols, a 25-year-old former Alexander High School teacher in Douglas County, Georgia, has been arrested and now faces expanded accusations that she engaged in sexual misconduct with multiple students. Court records and local reports say the charges include grooming, sexual assault and child molestation, and allege incidents that took place on school property and elsewhere. The Douglas County School System has notified parents and is cooperating with law enforcement while the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office investigates.

Authorities first moved in after an allegation that Nicols had sex with a student twice, once in a school closet and once in a Hummer parked in a driveway. That initial arrest prompted a wider look into her contacts with students, and investigators say additional evidence surfaced during their review of phone records and messages. The new charges expand the scope from a single victim to multiple alleged victims, raising fresh concerns for parents and school officials.

Court documents now allege Nicols was involved in sex-related conduct with six teenagers, according to local reporting that reviewed those filings. Prosecutors have added counts that include grooming of a minor, sexual assault and child molestation, reflecting the seriousness of the material investigators say they found. Those additional counts mean the case will likely involve separate interviews with each alleged victim and a more detailed examination of communications and digital records.

Investigators say some of the most disturbing claims involve nude photos, explicit videos and live video chats with minors. The records allege Nicols sent nude images and videos of herself and even engaged in live video chats in which underage students watched sexual conduct. Authorities also assert she used text messages to solicit sexual acts and encouraged sexualized behavior by sending explicit material and provocative suggestions to students.

One allegation describes a sexual encounter in the back of a student’s truck at a local golf club, illustrating that not all incidents were alleged to have occurred on campus. The breadth of locations named in the charges has complicated the investigation, since incidents allegedly occurred in private settings as well as in school spaces. That mix of alleged locations means investigators are looking at multiple timelines and witnesses as they build their case.

Nicols was booked with bond set at $74,000 and reportedly bonded out soon after her arrest. Bond conditions and monitoring will play a role in how authorities manage potential contact between the accused and the alleged victims while the case moves forward. Meanwhile, the Douglas County School System said it suspended Nicols’ teaching duties and took steps to notify families and staff once the allegations became known.

The Douglas County School System sent parents a letter addressing the situation and saying the district was “deeply troubled” by the allegations. “Upon learning of the alleged misconduct, the district immediately launched an investigation,” the letter sent after Nichols’ first arrest earlier this month said. The district also stated it will cooperate fully with state and local law enforcement and directed additional questions to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Local law enforcement continues to handle interviews, evidence collection and coordination with prosecutors as the case proceeds toward potential indictments. Given the involvement of minors and allegations that include electronic communications, investigators are likely working with digital forensic teams to preserve and analyze phones, messages and cloud accounts. Prosecutors will review that material to determine what charges to pursue and whether to bring counts related to child exploitation or the distribution of explicit material to minors.

Parents and community members have expressed shock and concern as more details emerge, and school officials say counselors are available to students affected by the situation. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is the lead agency on the criminal side, and the case remains active with no resolution yet announced. Media outlets covering the situation report court filings and statements from officials, while authorities urge anyone with relevant information to come forward to aid the investigation.
